Caleb ‘The Jet’ Ewan has proved everyone right – this is one rider to watch. The 21 year old continued Orica-GreenEDGE’s impressive streak at this year’s Vuelta a Espana by taking out stage five in this, his debut season and first Grand Tour.
Sprinting superstars Peter Sagan of Tinkoff-Saxo and John Degenkolb from Giant-Alpecin were unable to match the pace of Ewan, who benefited from a perfect lead out by his teammates Mitch Docker, Mathew Hayman and Jens Keukeleire.
Ewan’s win, which he’s called “by far the happiest day in my career”, follows an impressive five days of racing from Orica-GreenEDGE and in particular, Esteban Chaves. The Colombian rider and stage two winner had to relinquish the leader’s jersey during stage five with Giant-Alpecin’s Tom Dumoulin now wearing red.
We’ll be providing a full race report for the first week of the Vuelta, so keep an eye out for that.
