La Vuelta Back Stage Pass - Chaves Victorious on Stage 2

August 25, 2015

It's the first mountain stage from Alhaurín de la Torre to Caminito del Rey today at La Vuelta.

Pre-race banter is quality in this episode, Mathew Hayman observing the sleeping patterns of some of his younger team mates, in particular that of his roomy Caleb Ewan. If you do indeed "win the Tour in bed" Caleb Ewan has a good chance of taking out the Vuelta.

Security is so tight that Damien Howson has struggled to get on and off the bus, opting to stay in bed and work on his training following the lead of Ewan.

Whitey realises he needs to mix up his look - far too many buttons done up, not enough bling - and Cameron Meyer shows of his fresh white digs that he will be proudly wearing throughout the stage.

The stage itself favors the climbers today, Esteban Chaves the hopeful contender for Orica-GreenEDGE.

30.3 km to go and a crash breaks up the Peloton, as soon as it's established that Chaves is okay, Whitey reminds everyone that today, the priority is to get him as close to the front as possible and keep him there.

With 2 kilometres to the finish, Chaves breaks from the bunch passing Nicolas Roche and Quintana creating some serious distance. When Whitey is asked if he's heard where Froome is, he quite frankly states that he doesn't "give a fruit". At this stage, all anyone in the team car cares about is wear Chaves is.

It's a duel for first between Chaves and Nicolas Roche, the Big Man snapping at his rear tire. But Roche runs out of gas and Chaves takes out stage 2 to the roaring delight of his team mates and supporters.

Post race, Shayne Bannan reflects on Chaves' development: his rehabilitation from that big crash in Jan '13 to this point - winning stage 2 of the Vuelta.

We hear from the man of the hour himself after he puts on the leaders jersey and look forward to seeing him proudly wearing red to take on stage 3.

Here's hoping he gets the welcoming he deserves at home after an awesome stage victory, Chaves written on the pavement for him this time.
